We are avid book readers in our house and our “book time” part of the bedtime routine is my son’s favorite.

We started reading to him daily, even if for only 5 minutes, when he was a few weeks old. Now, we read two books every night as well as occasionally throughout the day.

Our Favorite Places to Get Books:

Baby shower

My son has a great collection of books over the past 2.5 years. It started at our baby shower when guests were asked to bring the baby a book.

Literati

For my son’s Christmas gift, his aunt got him a subscription to Literati. This is a great program through Amazon that automatically ships of box of new, age appropriate books to the child at the frequency selected. Then, the parent and child can decide which books to keep or send back. The books are always high quality and different than the titles typically sold at regular big box stores like Target and Walmart. Plus, the return window is very generous so you can read the books a few times before you return them!

Library

An obvious choice but you can’t beat free! We usually check out 5-7 books at the library every couple of  weeks. My secret is to randomly choose books off the shelves and quickly skim them to make sure they aren’t too long or too wordy.

Used book sales

Our library hosts this once a year and you can get a giant box of books for dirt cheap. We went nuts this year and let our toddler fill our box with whatever he wanted and we actually ended up with some good books! Our library has a “donation day” each month where we can donate any books we are tired of or don’t like and those books will be added to the next year’s book sale.

Thriftbooks.com

I love this website for finding cheaper, used versions of book titles I saw somewhere else but didn’t want to pay full price for. They have a huge selection and the books ship quickly. The condition of the books is always listed and is usually pretty accurate.

Target

Frequently  the Target app has deals on kids books like 25% off or BOGO. They typically have newer, more popular titles.

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a program designed to mail your child a book every month until they are 5 years old. It’s always a happy mail day when our book arrives! Check the Imagination Library to see if you live in a participating area.

No matter how many books we have, it always comes back to picking the same few for our bedtime routine.
